OBJECTIVESAND ORGANISATION

Within the framework of the new Euro-Mediterranean policy of the European Union a series of initiatives was implemented to increment the cooperation between the two Mediterranean shores.  In this context the General Direction for Science, Research and Development (DG-XII) contributes by supporting and financing activities which can promote and strengthen such a cooperation based on science and technology.

The Workshop in Tunis has been organized under the auspices of the INCO-DC(International Cooperation with Third Countries and International Organizations)which has financially supported this conference and the Secretariat for Scientific Research and Technology of Tunisia which has offered its support.  The organization of the Workshop was undertaken by the Institut National du Patrimoine of Tunisia and the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain.

The basic objectives of this meeting are the analysis of the contribution of science and technology to the study and safeguard of the Cultural Heritage. Nevertheless, the approach is multidisciplinar, because archaeology, architecture and socioeconomic sciences play also an essential role in the integral study of this issue.

As the result of this Workshop the organizers expect some concrete interdisciplinary initiatives, favoring in this way a new cooperation among the Euro-Mediterranean countries.
