Subject contents outlines :

Mass, energy, and entropy balance analysis of complex systems; evaluation of thermodynamic property changes of pure materials; solution thermodynamics of single-phase multicomponent systems; phase and chemical reaction equilibrium. Microstructure-properties of structural concrete, steel, and polymeric materials (wood and plastics). Materials response to loading and environmental. Elastic properties, strength, creep, drying shrinkage, and thermal shrinkage. Processes of deterioration of materials and failure mechanisms. Composition and microstructure; correlation with physical and mechanical behavior of metals, ceramics, and polymers. Thermodynamics of deformable media, energy formulations, closed-form application, computational approximations. Coupling of the behavior of solids and fluids within the framework of poromechanics. Micromechanics and nanomechanics. Thermochemistry, combined material and energy balances. Phase stability, crystal imperfections, solubility, oxidation, surface and interface energy and transformations. Materials selection. Testing methods. Manufacturing methods.

Competences and objectives acquired :

Skill of reducing material structure and thermodynamics problems to their models and finding underlying physics and corresponding equations; competence in solving problems and designing experiments verifying solutions the problems.
